Saint Etienne
This is and will always be..my number one favorite band and artist forever. What this band does to me, is something much more than just a highly pleasurable music listening experience. This band touches on every single part of my soul, my musical spirit even. Listening to this band makes me feel awesome. Their music seems like a dream, because only in my dreams could a band make such perfect music appealing to my ears. Every note, every beautiful melody, every instrument, all of Sarah's gorgeous vocals..it all just seems too perfect to even exist in reality. But they do, somehow?
To date, Saint Etienne has released 8 studio albums, all very different in musical style and concept but all bare St Etienne's unique signature sound of elegant, intelligent British music. Each album is well crafted and contains rich melodies, gorgeous placed instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics and vocals by the very talented Sarah Cracknell. Their music is sophisticated, dreamy and adventurous. Very poppy yet very independent by nature. I've always felt that Saint Etienne are the perfect blend of pop and alternative music for a band. Thus, they blend both worlds of musical style perfectly to my liking. I love how St Etienne do their experiments yet always stay very pop oriented. I also love how St Etienne play around with all sorts of different types of musical styles and genres.
By nature, St Etienne have always been a very chill band. A dreamy indie dance pop group, if you will. No other band to me does dance pop and indie pop with lush acoustics and moving melodies like them. They are truly one of a kind. A rarity by any means. But their main mood here is indeed "chill" and "uplifting". Which I love as those are two of my favorite moods for music. Along with quirky which they also touch on sometimes. But their main mood is usually more serious and thought provoking.
I pretty much love every song that they've ever done and I love all of their albums. But if I had to pick a favorite album, it might be Tales from the Turnpike house, which was released in 2005. This was a concept album, which told interesting stories of fictional characters living in London town. This album was one of their best for capturing the magic feeling between songs that noone else does quite like they do. You'll find some of the most beautiful string arrangements, acoustic bits and lush vocal soundscapes that you'd ever have the pleasure of hearing.
The one thing that Saint Etienne does better than anything else in their music, is perfectly capturing the magic feeling of when one listens to a moving melody or a thoughtful lyric in music, and makes it stay throughout the song and into the next song seemlessly. Their music will put the listener into a beautiful trance that you'll never want to come out of.
