I'll start..
Little Boots - Nocturnes 2013
This is Little Boots second album, a big departure from her first but equally as good (if not actually better)! Lyrically wise, Nocturnes may be weaker than her first. However, it should really be about the music in the end, right?
This is an album that took some through warming up to at first. Nocturnes is definitely more "raw" and more minimal than "Hands". At first I was really put off by the composition structure and melodies but later on, recently when I went back to this album, I nearly feel in love with it's majestic & magical sound. This is indeed one of the most solid pop albums that I've ever heard. It only took me about six times hearing the whole album in full (with the bonus track "Hush") to really begin to appreciate it's beauty.
On Nocturnes, Victoria said that she wanted to capture the feel of night time and I think she did that well. Naturally, I love any album with a night time feel and sound to it. I could also say that this album is dynamic, meaning that it has a punch of good variety and different kinds of moods swirling around in a blender, so you never get tired of listening to Nocturnes.
Victoria Hesketh's vocals sound more inspired on Nocturnes than on her debut I think. Her vocal performances on Nocturnes are more rich and adventurous. Overall Nocturnes has a cool early 90's dance style to it, which is intended to celebrates 90s house, seventies disco and futuristic electronics, all at the same time. Quite a remarkable and ambitious record.
Some may call Nocturnes weak compared to Victoria's debut, and I was one to think this at the beginning, but now I think that her second album is more naturally engaging to the listener. Nocturnes has a more inviting atmosphere of sound and does it without being too intrusive. Don't get me wrong, I "LOVE" Hands, but I think that Nocturnes has just the right natural mix of things to make it a gem. The ideas and influences that Nocturnes may borrow from may not really be that dense in a fresh creative scope type of deal, but what I think Nocturnes does do is completely captivate the listener in one of the most wonderful ways that I could have ever known.
The melodies on Nocturnes are just magic, the minimal beats are perfectly placed into each tune and Victoria's vocals are so pretty and cute. The way that every track flows from each other til the albums end is just like a precious feeling that touches one's soul. I now see this special album as a true keepsake and one that will from now on be on regular rotation.
Speaking of Nocturnes cool night time sound to it..I love the nice touch of dark tones and spooky atmosphere throughout the album. Nocturnes is a bit mysterious and tranquil but also lively and uplifting and in a way, a album that celebrates on itself on its inspirational ideas and I think just love for music.
The albums closing track "Satellite" is just mesmerizing! It's perfect as a farewell but very uplifting track with some good lasting energy left in it. It makes you want to jump up and reach the night stars. The Japanese bonus track "Hush" is not as good as the rest of the album but it's got a cool late night club sound to it and a nice beat. Other standout tracks are the amazing retro club stomper "Shake", the very catchy and fun "Confusion", the hypnotizing beauty "Strangers" & "Beat beat", which is a groovy disco'ish like gem.
My favorite track on Nocturnes would definitely have to be "Crescendo"! What a marvelous tune! It's colorful, catchy and uplifting. The sound on Crescendo is a little fun, bouncy and quirky. The melody and composition is quite genius and one of the tracks where I think that Victoria Hesketh's vocals really shine! Well until my next album review, I will leave you with "Crescendo". Thanks for reading!
